How strong is your willpower? There are some studies that show self-control improves if you top up your supply of willpower with sugar! A bit of a problem if you want to loose weight!! How else can you have more willpower?
A friend regularly sets himself challenges for a few weeks to strengthen his willpower….exercising every day, going to bed at a certain time each night, even eating no sugar! Deliberate exercising of willpower helps him when he really needs to use his willpower. Can you strengthen your willpower? Do you treat willpower like a muscle to be trained? Maybe we can strengthen our willpower to stop doing things too? We could stop interrupting someone speaking, we could stop those nervous habits! Here is an exercise to try to improve your willpower.
Take deliberate control and switch unwanted behaviors off and on until they are under control. For example copy the desire to twirl hair etc, turn it on, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off until it is under your deliberate control.
Objective: To identify motivating forces on automatic and take control of them.
Expected Results: Stillness, reduction of stress, recovery of creative power.
Instructions: Identify an automatic reaction or impulse and copy it exactly and repeatedly (without harming anyone) until it comes off automatic and is under the control of your will. (Turn it on; turn it off.) If the reaction or impulse is concerned with an addiction or a socially unacceptable behavior, repeatedly dramatize the desire for the action, as if on stage, without actual doing anything. (Turn the desire on; turn the desire off.) Source: Seven Pillars of Enlightenment, Avatar® Basic Will mini-course by Harry Palmer.
