I am one of those avid skiers whose mind drifts to cooler thoughts of downhill skiing during the heat of these dog days of summer.   At the top of a very steep and narrow slope, a ski instructor once told me to focus on the things I could control.  I could control how to position my body and the angle of my skis, but not the weather conditions nor the terrain of the mountain.  It’s a lesson that I keep with me to this day.  We can set goals and define our business message, but there will be external forces that impact our performance and results which we can’t always anticipate.  While we can do our best to prepare and plan, we also have to have the flexibility to adapt and change direction when necessary.

Whether its stressing less about the things outside our control, or doing more to adapt to the curveballs that lie ahead –ultimately, we can do a better job of managing, by recognizing what is truly ours to manage.
